The Hoax of '65

Special thanks to one of our readers for pointing out this memorable date in Cornell Basketball History.

In advance of the Cornell at Princeton game on Saturday, February 27, 1965, during the early morning hours of Friday, February 26, a group of mischievous Cornell Daily Sun editors distributed approximately 2,000 copies of a counterfeit issue of the Daily Princetonian on the campus of Princeton. The fake issue (pictured below) bore the headline: "Bill Bradley Sprains Right Ankle, Hopes For Ivy League Title Sink." Above, the March 1, 1965 issue of the Daily Princetonian addresses the clever hoax committed by the staffers from the Cornell Daily Sun. Princeton ultimately won the game, 107-84 and clinched the Ivy League title. The Big Red's '65 team was arguably one of the best Ivy League teams in history to not win the league title with Cornell finishing 19-5 and 11-3 in the league. The hoax was picked up by the Associated Press and appeared in most major newspapers including the New York Times.
