Washington, 7-6 under Turner, who had won the the NFC East in 1999, went 1-2 under interim coach Terry Robiskie and didn't get back to the playoffs until 2005 for Joe Gibbs. Minnesota's Mike Tice lasted through 2005, but he made the playoffs just once and his high-water mark was 9-7.
These examples are what Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has to consider as he decides whether to fire coach Wade Phillips in the wake of Sunday night's second embarrassment on national television in 14 days (with a home drubbing by Jacksonville in between) that dropped Dallas to a stunning 1-7, a year after its 11-5 NFC East championship season. At least Jones could blame the loss to the Giants on the shock of losing quarterback Tony Romo to a broken left collarbone in the second quarter (Dallas was winning when Romo was hurt).
