News and Notes: Thursday Edition

  • The Charlotte News Observer writes of former Cornell coach and current Boston College coach, Steve Donahue, "Coming from the Ivy League, he may not be a known quantity around the ACC - outside of Cornell's NCAA tournament run last spring - but he tried to do his homework, calling other coaches to figure out exactly what he was getting himself into." The Washington Post reports that during the ACC Media Day, Donahue jokingly suggested that the rest of the league should take it easy on him this year. "Be nice, right?" he said. "There's no hazing in this league for first-year guys. Let me get my feet under me."
  • In previewing the upcoming Wisconsin season, BadgerBlitz.com wrote, "Wisconsin bowed out of the [2010 NCAA] tournament with a sobering 87-69 loss to Cornell in the second round."
  • GoBlackNights.com interviewed former Cornell assistant and current Army head coach, Zach Spiker. Below is an excerpt from the article:
"'[O]ur jobs as coaches are to encourage, motivate and teach.'' He did that very well as an assistant coach at Cornell for five years, when the Big Red won three straight Ivy League titles and last year became the first Ivy team in 31 years to reach the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament.

Two former players at Cornell were brought in on his new staff this past spring: Kevin App, Class of 2007, and Ka'Ron Barnes, Class of 2004. Omar Mance (Rice) and Jimmy Allen (Emory & Henry) complete his young staff. Allen comes to West Point after six years as an assistant coach at the U.S. Naval Academy.

...Having coached in the Ivy League, Spiker's targeted recruits are not dissimilar to the athletes he coached Upstate. 'That was something that excited me about this opportunity, the inroads in terms of networks and connections,' he said, 'and the type of kid we recruited at Cornell was the exact same kid we want to bring to the academy. The only exception is that they need to understand and be educated about the five-year post-grad experience. But in terms of board scores and things like that, this is very, very similar, which I think will allow us to play a very similar style of play.'"

  • Louis Dale ('10) scored 5 points and grabbed 3 rebounds in Gottingen's 80-61 win over Duesseldorf on Wednesday.
  • The LegaDue (Italy) league website has some quotes from the Fulogr Libertas Forli staff about the future of Ryan Wittman ('10). The franchise has reportedly been considering cutting Wittman and signing a veteran guard. Below, photos from Wittman's last game, Forli's 65-53 loss on October 17 to Immorbiliare Spiga Rimini. Wittman finished with 8 points.

  • Dartmouth junior forward Josh Riddle was removed from Big Green roster. He joins Herve Kouna and Josef Brown as veterans dropped from 2010-2011 roster.
  • The Harvard Crimson reports that Max Kenyi, a junior guard, who suffered an MCL injury a year ago, will take a leave of absence for one year from the University. The ulimate outcome of Kenyi's "leave of absence" will be the functional equivalent of an on campus red-shirt season. He will return to Cambridge in 2011-2012 as an academic junior with two years of preserved eligibility.
  • Fans of the basketball program in the Ithaca area should not miss the opportunity to join the Cornell Rebounders Club. Join the Club at Newman Arena, Saturday, October 23 to see the three-time defending Ivy League Champions and Sweet Sixteen Cornell team in action in the annual Red-White Game.
